Growing Tomatoes from Seed 2023
Do you want to learn how to grow great tomatoes? This is the first in a series of three programs presented by Galveston County Master Gardener Ira Gervais learning all how to grow great tomatoes in Galveston County.
Part 1 will cover growing tomatoes from seeds, where to obtain seeds and supplies, and more needed to start and grow your seedlings. Discussion topics include how to pick the best seed varieties for Galveston County, seed starting methods, growing techniques and preparing your starter plants for spring garden planting. 2023 Galveston County Pecan Show thru Dec. 6
Bringing pecan pride, open to commercial and backyard growers, and celebrating pecan culture in Galveston County!

Entry deadline and pecan show programs:
- Deadline – December 6 – Entries must be dropped off by December 6, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Galveston County Extension office, 4102-B Main Street, La Marque, TX
- Judging – December 8 – Entries will be judged by a local volunteer committee on Friday, December 8, 2023
- Awards – December 9 – Results and awards will be presented at seminar ‘Going Nuts for Pecans!‘, Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 1 pm.
Gardening Seminar – Plumeria Care in Winter

Healthy Lawns & Healthy Waters Workshop
FREE Healthy Lawns Healthy Waters Workshop! June 28 from 8:30 am -12:30 pm we will be offering residential rainwater harvesting and turf management training. A FREE Texas A&M AgriLife Extension soil sample analysis (Routine and Micronutrient analysis) is available to everyone attending. HLHW workshop participants learn:
* how to design and install residential rainwater capture devices that support rainwater storage and landscape irrigation
* the importance of choosing climate- and soil-appropriate turf and landscaping species for local growing conditions
* the key importance of soil testing and how to determine nutrient application amounts
* how to improve irrigation water use efficiency through better understanding of evapotranspiration, smart meters, deficit irrigation and cycle-soak methods for reducing runoff
* water delivery equipment and measuring water distribution

Plumeria Propagation Workshop
Celebrate and cultivate plumeria with Loretta Osteen, Galveston County Master Gardener. Loretta will lead a hands-on workshop demonstrating propagation methods for plumeria from cuttings and seeds. Participates will also learn how to make Hawaiian Lei with plumeria blooms.

Blackberries – Urban Orchard Series
Urban Orchard Series – Bramble On! Blackberries. Presented by Galveston County Master Gardener Monica Martins and Horticulture Agent Stephen Brueggerhoff, we will explore blackberry cultivation including varieties (thorned and thornless), growth habit and seasonal pruning, trellising systems and fertilization. You will learn about soil preparation and planting, as well as disease and pest management.

Explore the art and science of grafting pecan trees for home orchard improvement. Galveston County Master Gardener Hazel Lampton, a gardener with years of experience growing avocados, will provide a program featuring the best varieties for our area of the Gulf Coast. She will cover how to start plants from seeds, as well as tips on tree planting, and cultivation methods for growing avocados. Discover the best methods to protect plants from cold and sun, especially vital for young trees.
