Presenter

Jim Hastings was born in El Paso but grew up straddling the state line in Anthony, New Mexico, and Texas. Living in the Mesilla Valley exposed him to native plants, agricultural crops, and a wide range of home gardens.

His degrees from New Mexico State University and Texas Tech University prepared him for a 32 year career in different capacities at Texas Tech University, the early years of Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, then, at the Texas Tech Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. He retired as a faculty member of the Texas Tech Rural Health Program based at the El Paso campus.

Upon retiring, he got involved with the El Paso Master Gardeners, the El Paso Cactus and Rock Club, and the El Paso Chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico. Those organizations helped expand his gardening knowledge. As a Master Gardener, he developed and presented programs for schools, area gardening groups, and for the El Paso Home Shows.

Although time has slowed him down somewhat, he still shares gardening information and occasional cooking demonstrations using cactus and other garden plants. He still claims getting down and dirty in the garden is fun, but says getting up is another story!
