Since we’re so close to summer it’s a great time to talk about what we can grow in the heat that Texas gives us. Yes, we can definitely grow a vegetable garden, herb garden and even flower garden in the heat of a Texas summer.
Virtual – The 6 D’s of Container Gardening Success Webinar
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension-Travis County concludes their 2024 Texas Tough Plants educational series with The 6D’s of Container Gardening Success, May 8th, 10 am to noon.
Kirk Walden, Travis County Master Gardener, will convince you that whether you want winter color or summer vegetables, you can grow it in containers. The session covers the major considerations and decisions that lead to gardening success – from design and soil to irrigation and sunlight. Participants will come away with a list of recommended plants and resources suitable for Central Texas. The program will be presented utilizing a webinar format.

Angelina County – Snake Woman’s Garden at Caddo Mounds
Angelina Master Gardeners Noon Gardening Program will be “Snake Woman’s Garden at Caddo Mounds” presented by Kim Benton. Kim is a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent for Horticulture in Cherokee County. Snake Woman’s Garden is a project of Cherokee County Master Gardeners and uses heirloom plants and seeds. If you are interested in heirloom plants and seeds or the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, this program is for you. Bring your lunch.
Leon County – Safely Controlling Insects in the Garden
Our next Lunch and Learn Gardening program will be on April 10, 2024. The subject is “Safely Controlling Insects in the Garden” presented by Master Gardeners Steve Ogden and Jim Porter. All programs are held at the Centerville First United Methodist Church from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The location is 245 S. Commerce Street in Centerville. Bring your lunch and learn something new about gardening every second Wednesday of the month.
Travis County – Spring Vegetable Gardening
Space is limited to 50 participants for Master Gardener and Vegetable Specialist Patty Leander’s Spring Vegetable Gardening class. Register here to reserve your space: https://bit.ly/49DwfN9
Patty will share how to grow heat tolerant vegetables (like okra, butterbeans, Southern peas, warm season greens, etc.) and include tips for shading and mulching. The class will begin inside and then end with a tour through the vegetable demonstration garden. Masks are optional. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
The first Friday of every month is designated as an open house for the Texas A&M AgriLife Earth-Kind Demonstration Garden at 1600 Smith Road, Austin. You’ll be able to visit the garden and speak with the Travis County Master Gardener volunteers who maintain it and get your gardening questions answered.
Fannin County – 19th Annual Garden, Lawn & Home Expo
The 19th annual Garden, Lawn and Home Expo will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex at 700 FM 87, Bonham, TX. This one-day event is hosted by the Fannin County Master Gardeners. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.
Katie Capehart from the Collin County Beekeepers Association will speak at 9:00 a.m. on “Beekeeping.”
At 10: 30 a.m. Bryan Moore, from Good Earth Soil and Materials, will present his program on “Soil, Compost, and Earth-Kind® Practices.”
At 12:00 Jim Ewoldsen, former President of the Collin County Master Gardener Association will present on “Growing Tomatoes.”
At 1:30, Jan Hodson, from the Texas Master Naturalists – Elm Fork Chapter in Cooke County will speak on “The Ecology of Native Plants.”
Vendors will be present offering a wide variety of plants, yard art, home and lawn care products and services, and a food truck will be on the grounds for visitors’ convenience.
