The soil is the source for all the elements plants need to grow: nutrients, organic matter, air, and water. Healthy soil is also the foundation of a water-efficient landscape, particularly here in North Texas where our soils are almost always poorly draining, sticky clay.
A soil test can identify nutrient deficiencies, acidity or alkalinity, amount of organic matter and the texture of your soil. The test provided a cost efficient way of eliminating runoff from excess chemicals. Care for your soil by identifying what is lacking and adding amendments accordingly, is key to growing healthy plants year after year. Over time the quality of your soil changes, therefore a soil test is recommended every 3 to 5 years.
Where to Get Your Soil Tested
Obtain sample bags and instructions from your local County Extension Office. For your convenience you may also use your own bag and find instructions here. Please note, your County Extension Office does not mail your soil samples. You must mail your soil samples directly to the Texas A&M Soil Testing Lab.
