Indoor gardens have come a long way from your
typical houseplant. Grow lights, hydroponic systems
and terrariums have expanded our options for growing
beautiful flowers, herbs, succulents and vegetables
inside. A window with a southern or western exposure
will generally provide the four-six hours of light a day
plants need.
Even when placed near a window
additional light from an artificial source may be
required for adequate plant growth or when starting
seeds indoors. Plants grown only with artificial light
need at least 12-16 hours of light each day. Keep
the lights about 6-12 inches above the plants.
Fluorescent and LED grow-lights are an excellent
alternative to natural light.
The choices for indoor plants are endless. Culinary herbs are ideal for
growing indoors because they don’t need a lot of
space and can thrive on sunlight from a bright window.
Choose plants that mature quickly and stay compact
enough to grow in containers without outgrowing their
space. Recommended herbs for indoor gardening
include: Basil, Bay, Chives, Cilantro, Dill, Lemongrass,
Mint, Mustard, Oregano, Marjoram, Parsley,
Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon and Thyme. Pots that are
a minimum of six inches across will ensure adequate
growing room.
Quality potting soil with good drainage,
proper fertilization and adequate light will ensure the
success of your indoor garden.
