There is a vast array of characteristics that help to define a Master Gardener. Words such as passion, dedication, hard-working, and community-minded are but a few of the sure-footed descriptions that would apply. The McLennan County Master Gardener Association (“MCMGA/Association”) is honored to have a member among its ranks that has repeatedly exhibited these hallmark traits throughout their years of service—her name is Ila Jean Carothers. As a way to respectfully memorialize Ila Jean’s significant contributions throughout her tenure, the MCMGA is proud to submit her name as a candidate for the Association’s Master Gardener Emeritus status.
Historical Background
Ila Jean Carothers has been an instrumental part of the MCMGA. In fact, she was one of the founding members during the 1996 formation of the Association. That said, Ila Jean’s passion for gardening even pre-dates the MCMGA. She was an integral member of the Waco Garden Clinic Garden Club (the organization was so named since many of the members worked in the medical field). In addition to the Garden Club, Ila Jean served as a Texas Garden Club Flower Show Judge.
In addition to her passion for gardening, Ila Jean has always exhibited a fondness for sharing her vast knowledge with others. For example, Ila Jean led several lessons involving plant propagation regarding various Master Gardener Intern classes.
Ila Jean also enjoyed making presentations on topics such as Raised Bed Gardening at Waco’s Carleen Bright Arboretum. Speaking of raised beds, Ila Jean was a significant contributor of vegetables from her own garden to one of the local food donation centers (Caritas of Waco).
Roses were another special part of Ila Jean’s world. She was instrumental in assisting with the “Earth-Kind®” rose test garden on the campus of the Texas State Technical College of Waco. Ila Jean also offered informative presentations on the subject matter. Her love of gardening also embraced the collection and sharing of seeds with others for years.
Ila Jean also served as the Association’s state delegate for several years and was the recipient at the annual Texas Master Gardener Conference of the Small Association Category’s “Individual Master Gardener Award” in 2006 and the “Outstanding Volunteer Award” in 2012 by the McLennan County Texas AgriLife Extension. She also served as a member of the McLennan County Extension Service Horticulture Advisory Committee.
Summary
Ila Jean Carothers has been an invaluable part of the MCMGA for over 25 years. Her love of gardening and passion for sharing her vast knowledge work to highlight her as an exemplary Master Gardener.
