Fresh, flavorful strawberries can thrive on the Gulf Coast with the right planning and care! Join Galveston County Master Gardener Michael Reed as he shares practical, research-based techniques for growing productive strawberry plants at home.

Topics include:

  • Selecting the best strawberry varieties for Gulf Coast growing conditions
  • Choosing between plugs and bare-root plants
  • Planting in raised beds, containers, or traditional garden rows
  • Soil preparation, fertilization, irrigation, and proper plant spacing
  • Companion planting and seasonal maintenance
  • Identifying common pests and diseases
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to keep plants healthy
  • Tips for maximizing berry production from planting through harvest

Growing Strawberries 2022

Presented by Galveston County Master Gardener Robert Marshall, we will explore the history of strawberries in our area and give you expert advice to help you successfully grow strawberries in Galveston County.  Marshall will include the correct time to plant, the best varieties for this area, and planting bare root vs plugs.  He will also tell you how to prepare your strawberry beds, water and fertilizer needs, and disease and pest control.
