Master Gardener 1998-2010
June McClain has been an active Master Gardener in the Smith County program since 1998. She has volunteered in a variety of projects, including working on the Northeast Texas Gardening Guide and Calendar, the Bedding Plant Research Assistance program at Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Overton, and working in the IDEA Garden and Heritage Rose Garden. She served on search committees for Executive Board members, and served as Phone Tree Chairman, contacting members without email regarding upcoming events.
Most notably, June devoted the last 6 years coordinating an outstanding Junior Master Gardener program for children in Smith County. She organized recruited, trained and taught both Master Gardeners to be teachers and youth to participate in both the traditional Junior Master Garden curriculum and other JMG currcicula. June is a person with a deep commitment to her community and sincerely believes that everyone has an obligation to make the world a better place for our being here. Her deep love of children, nature, and gardening made involvement in the JMG Program a perfect fit.
Over the last 14 years, June has volunteer 1461 hours to Smith County programs, and in 2005 had the most hours. She received the Smith County Master Gardener “Youth Award” in 2005, and received the prestigious “Marva Beck Junior Master Gardener Leader of the Year” in 2009 in recognition for her dedication in sharing her love of gardening, the environment and nature to the youth of Smith County.
