About the Sale:
The annual plant sale began over ten years ago as a fund raiser for the Concho Valley Master Gardeners. Since then it has grown tremendously. Last year over 5,800 plants were sold and propagation team members volunteered over 1,000 hours to grow the plants for the sale.
A few weeks after the sale, the propagation team began preparations for next year’s sale. Plants are evaluated, plants for the next year are selected, the greenhouse is cleaned and pots are prepared before propagation begins in late summer. Plants are chosen for their ability to thrive in the Concho Valley and. The propagation team propagates all plants from seeds, from cuttings or by division.
The sale is on the first Saturday in April unless that is the Easter weekend. Doors open at 8:00 am (not before) and the sale ends at noon or whenever sold out. Plant prices are generally from $3.00 to $10.00 with hanging baskets, succulent dishes, composed flower pots and composed herb pots being higher. Checks and cash are the only forms of payment we are able to accept.
Planting Tips:
Is is not advisable to plant your purchased plants the day of the sale. The plants have been in a controlled greenhouse environment. Your outdoor space presents a new set of conditions: sunlight, wind & cooler temperatures. Your plants will thrive better if given the chance to ‘harden off’ before being planted in the ground – this consists of a few days outside with the gradual increasing amount of low exposure to sun, wind & outdoor temperatures. It is best to plant them in late afternoon on days of low wind velocity.
