St Mary’s: Growing Healthy Communities

Contact: Mary Ann Everett

At St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple, Texas, Mary Ann Everett has put together two Junior Master Gardener programs that are supported by the BCMGA:

• Learn, Grow, Eat, Go(LGEG): an integrated program combining academic achievement, nutrition, and exercise. The students learn about plants, what they need, what plants provide for our needs, and how the class can work together to provide for the garden. They learn about nutrition, try new vegetables, fix simple recipes, and do a variety of exercises. This class starts at the beginning of school in August, and runs until the second week of December. It is a one semester class.

• Junior Master Gardener – Level 1 (JMG1): This is a one year class. There are 8 chapters in the teacher’s guide, covering a broad range of horticultural and environmental education topics. The students have their books with activities. The JMG1 class does all sorts of activities, learning science process skills, problem solving, using both group and individual learning experiences. All JMG curriculum is correlated to academic standards for science, math, language arts, and social studies.

Exercise is a good thing! Exercising on the school ground.

Students planted a garden, harvested what they grew and then ate what they grew!
