June Checklist

June 7, 2020 by grecker

Planting

___ Generally, the month of June is too hot to plant.  However, if you must, keep new plantings well watered.

___ Continue to plant warm-season grasses.

___ Transplants of eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes may be planted this month.

___ Plant seeds for fall transplants.

Care

___ Deal with excessive thatch in lawns.

___ Remove fallen/diseased leaves from and around roses.

___ Use mulch around vegetables.

  Watering

___ Most annuals and plantings in pots will need to be watered on an almost daily schedule.

___ Water lawns and trees to a depth of 1 inch when needed.

___ Water vegetables to a depth of 1-2 inches per week.

Problems

___ June weather brings problems with insects and diseases.  Make sure to monitor all plantings on a  regular basis for signs of trouble such as wilting, browning or yellowing, holes, and leaf curling.

___ Be on the watch for spider mites.  They are almost too small to be seen with the naked eye, but fine webbing is a sign of heavy infestation.

___ Be cautious about using weed killers on lawns.  High temperatures may cause damage after using pesticides.

Pruning

___   Prune roses that are not repeat bloomers.
