2023 Master Gardener Training!

Become a Somervell County Master Gardener!

Mark your calendar for March 28, 2023 for the next Master Gardener Training. This course is only held every two years so if you have an active interest in gardening this is your opportunity to join the Somervell County Master Gardeners Association (SCMGA). Class is held on Tuesday each week. The location will rotate between Glen Rose, Cleburne, and Granbury. A site visit to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens is also scheduled.

MG Training FlyerThe Somervell County Master Gardeners are volunteers who work with the Extension Service to benefit our community through education, beautification, problem solving & by sharing gardening knowledge. “Each of us has a special interest and knowledge in some aspect of gardening. We are eager to learn and share our expertise. As our membership increases, we can have a larger horticultural impact on our community and the environment” explained Valerie Freund, SCMGA Secretary.

Once accepted into the Master Gardener program you will receive a minimum of 50 hours of instruction in horticulture. The ten-week Master Gardener training course is taught by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension specialists, agents, and local experts. Subjects include lawn care, soils and plant nutrition, pest and weed management, vegetable and fruit production, trees, shrubs, flowers, and water conservation just to name a few.

In exchange for this intense training, participants are asked to volunteer time to our Somervell County Master Gardener program. At least 50 hours of volunteer service within one year of training is required to earn the title of “Texas Master Gardener.” To maintain that certification a minimum number of volunteer and continuing education hours are required each year.

We invite you to attend an Open House/Meet and Greet on Wednesday, November 16, 10:00 a.m., at the County Extension office 1405 Texas Dr. (behind the Expo). As always, you have a standing invitation to attend any of our monthly meetings held at the Extension office on the third Wednesday of each month, 10:00 a.m., 1405 Texas Dr.

For an application or additional information on the training contact the County Extension Office at 254 897-2809. Deadline to submit applications is February 1, 2023.
