Wildlife biologist Kyle Brunson of Texas Parks and Wildlife will be the guest speaker at the Henderson County Master Gardener Association’s “Let’s Grow” program on Tuesday, March 26, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cain Center YMCA, 915 S. Palestine Street, Athens. This program is free and open to the public. Please enter on the lower level of the YMCA on Loyola Drive, then take the elevator or stairs to the Civic Hall meeting room.
During the program, Brunson will share how you can turn your yard or small acreage into a wildlife friendly habitat for birds, bees, and wildlife. He will explain the importance of planting wildflowers, native plants, and native grasses. Part of the enjoyment of growing a beautiful landscape is seeing the many animals it attracts and helps support. The choice of plants added to your landscape can make an enormous difference in whether your garden is teeming with activity or is quiet and barren of wildlife.
Brunson has been a Natural Resources Specialist with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for nine years managing the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area. His role on the Wildlife Management Area consists of planning and implementation of all habitat management activities including prescribed burning, wildlife surveys and population management, public hunting, and education and outreach.
One of the easiest ways to attract birds and bees to your landscape is to add plants that feed them. Bees appreciate plants that flower. Birds love the seeds left through winter. But not every plant is created equal. Native birds and native bees appreciate native plants. The more native plants in your landscape, the more your garden can support their populations. Brunson will give you a selection of plants to enjoy not only for their looks but also for their importance in sustaining native wildlife. Come learn how your garden can be full of life as well as beauty.
