Culture

‘Peggy Martin’ Rose is a multi-stemmed deciduous woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. This woody vine will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It is a good choice for attracting bees to your yard. ‘Peggy Martin’ Rose features showy clusters of fragrant pink flowers with white overtones and gold eyes along the branches from late spring to mid fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting. It has dark green foliage throughout the season. The oval compound leaves do not develop any appreciable fall color. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Sometimes out of destruction comes hope and beauty. That is exactly the case with the ‘Peggy Martin’ Rose. Peggy Martin was a resident of Plaquemines Parish, just outside New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. She was an active member of New Orleans Old Garden Rose Society. Her residence boasted several cultivars of roses but this particular climbing rose in her garden was one of only two plants in her yard to survive (the other was a type of Crinum Lily). The cuttings that created this rose had been passed down to her. It survived being under 20 feet of saltwater for over 2 weeks! The ‘Peggy Martin’ rose is one of the easiest climbing roses to care for. It is incredibly disease resistant and requires very little TLC. It will climb a trellis or fence over 20 feet in height. Once established, it will bloom in fall as well as spring. Reportedly, it will even tolerate below zero temperatures. As with all roses, plant your new ‘Peggy Martin’ in well-drained soil and fertilize twice a year to promote growth as well as blooming. That’s about all you need to do. Try this thornless beauty in a sunny spot in your garden and enjoy!
