Culture

Lantana ‘New Gold’ blooms from spring through fall with an abundance of golden yellow flower clusters. It attracts butterflies and provides good winter cover for birds and small animals. This Texas Superstar® is best planted in full sun and requires little water; yet, regular watering during the first season will establish the plant with a deep wide root system. Lantana camera has a strong fragrance when bruised. Prune this plant to the ground and fertilize in the spring.

This easy care, heat-loving plant is great for containers and rock gardens and its bountiful blooming habit creates a striking mass planting. ‘New Gold’ Lantana is a staple for any xeriscaping.

Noteworthy Characteristics

The lantana is a plant which is very adapted to this area provided they are grown in a sunny location. When well established the plants are very drought tolerant, and continue to produce bright and attractive blooms in the hottest of weather. This new variety named ‘New Gold’ won’t contaminate local landscapes and can take its place as a useful, colorful native plant which everyone will want to plant and enjoy. The absolutely best improvement which has been made is sterilization. ‘New Gold’ blooms profusely but seldom forms berries which have to be removed before more bloom will be produced. This revolutionary new development in lantanas insures that this plant will be a continuous beauty rather than a virulent pest with its unwelcomed seedling offspring.

Problems

Do not ingest any part of the ‘New Gold’ Lantana. Be careful handling the plant due to the possibility of skin irritation or allergic reaction.  While lantana camera is generally impervious to most diseases, powdery mildew can become a problem if the plant is in too much shade. Root rot can set in if the roots are kept too wet and sooty mold can discolor the leaves. Lace bugs cause the leaves to turn gray or brown and fall off.

Garden Uses

‘New Gold’ Lantana should be used massed in the garden in sunny beds large enough to have an impact on you and the butterflies that frequent it. Great for containers, rock gardens, and hanging baskets.
