Culture

Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun, Gladiolus Nanus Mix tolerates some part afternoon shade. Prefers light, well-drained, organically rich soils. Site in a sheltered location protected from strong winds. May be easily grown in the Texas Zone 8 area without lifting the corms in fall. As the name suggests, the Hardy Gladiolus Mix features summer-blooming glads that are more cold-hardy than other varieties, but these are also shorter, making them perfect for planting in containers.  Will naturalize in the garden over time.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Gladiolus in mixed colors are truly breathtaking in your garden!  Producing elegant, flower spikes with orchid-like blooms, these easy-to-grow bulbs bloom in a wide array of gorgeous colors, ranging from white, pink, red, orange, and bi-colors.  They require little ground space, due to their upright growth habit, and will produce a big show wherever they’re planted.  They are spectacular cut flowers and equally beautiful in perennial gardens, annual flower borders, container gardens and even vegetable gardens. Once the flowers fade, the sword-like foliage continues to be an attractive addition to the garden.

The Nanus Mix is actually a different species from the gladiolus we all know due to its height, hardiness, and flower-shape.

Problems

Susceptible to botrytis, crown rot, rust, wilt and mosaic virus. Watch for aphids, mealy bugs, spider mites and thrips.

Garden Uses

Beds. Borders. Cut flowers. Bouquets. Container plant for decks and patios.
