Q: I have this weird weed in my lawn, I have dug, pulled and sprayed and I cannot get rid of it. It is a vine like plant with little leaves a tiny white star like flower and sticky berry or seed pod, any idea what it is and how do I kill it?
A: Thank you for a good description, what you have is plant by the name of Virginia Button Weed, a tough weed to get rid of. It not only produces seed abundantly, but it will root quickly from the smallest piece of stem and has underground roots that also will re-grow from the smallest forgotten piece. Treat the area with a pre-emergent weed control for general weeds and them spray the areas the weed is located in with a general purpose weed killer containing 2-4D, this is the same kind of weed killer you would use to eliminate Dandelions or clover in the lawn. Be careful not to get the weed killer on any shrub, tree or flower it can damage or kill them. But the sprays are safe for most lawn grasses such as Bermuda, St. Augustine, Buffalo or Zoysia. It may take several repeat treatments to kill what is visible then again next season as other remnants attempt to restart.
