Q: What are soil amendments and why would I need them?
A: A Soil amendment is anything added to or used in the soil to improve plant growth or production, thru improved drainage, or moisture holding or changing the acidity or alkalinity of the soil or to provide nutrients that may be lacking, also to help conserve moisture in dry conditions and help inhibit weed growth. Amendments that are mixed into the soil include compost, sphagnum peat moss, expanded shale and other organic products. Fertilizers add nutrients and mulches hold moisture and help suppress weeds.
