Q: There are lots of dead spots in my St. Augustine lawn this spring, what is wrong and what can I do?
A: The dead spots can be the result of winter kill from the temperatures or if the lawn was damaged by chinch bugs or being dry going into the winter the weak turf may have not been strong enough to survive, fungus is another possibility. If you have yellowed turf around the area of the dead spots then you have one of the fungus problems, if the turf is green all the way up to the spots then it could be cold damage or some other non disease problem. All that I can recommend is to fertilize and water and use a systemic fungicide it you have the yellowing. Contact your local independent garden center for more information.
