Q: The wind blows so hard in Texas that it has actually broken the stems of my new tomato transplants. What can I do to protect them?
A: What you need is a miniature windbreak. Many gardeners put a coffee or shortening can with the top and bottom cut out over their delicate new transplants, pushed a couple of inches in the soil. By the time the tomatoes have grown above the level of the can, they will be strong enough to withstand the wind. Another solution is to use ‘row cover’ a white fabric which lets light through and protects the plant until it is big enough to stand on its own.
