Q: What plant can I use as a border around my flowerbeds?
A: Liriope is a great border plant. It is evergreen, grows in sun or shade, helps control soil erosion when planted in a line across a slope, has few disease problems, and even has flower spikes in the summer. Another lesser-known plant that is good for borders is Ruellia ‘Katie’. This plant is smaller than Liriope, so it won’t interfere with shorter flowers such as alyssum, but it is semi-evergreen and has larger lavender or pink flowers in summer. Do not get the tall form of ruellia as it is wildly invasive and much too tall for a border.
