Q: I have Bermuda grass mixed in with my St. Augustine grass. How can I eliminate the Bermuda without killing the St. Augustine?
A: The bad news is that Bermuda grass is very difficult to control and chemical products that control Bermuda also kill St. Augustine as they are both grasses. Your best bet is to shade out the Bermuda by raising your mower blade high, about 3 to 3.5 inches. Bermuda grass thrives in the sun and by shading it with St. Augustine, it should weaken and die out. If there are large spots of mostly Bermuda grass, you may carefully use a herbicide. It will probably take several applications to fully kill the Bermuda grass. Once you are sure it is dead, you may replant with St. Augustine.
