BIOINTENSIVE GARDENING
Our speaker will be Chris Kirby and he will talk about how to produce a beautiful organic garden with minimal water and care. Mr Kirby is an advocate of the biointensive gardening movement where he has been growing more vegetables for decades and will share some of his ideas for a successful garden.
Summary:
Biointensive gardening capitalizes on deep cultivation and close crop spacing to maximize yields with minimal inputs. In other words, more crops come out of smaller spaces with smaller amounts of every input – water, fertilizer, compost, time, etc. – than any other growing method of which I’m aware. In addition to crop production, the goal of Biointensive is to be fully self-sustaining. According to the founder of this gardening method, Jon Jeavons, if carried to its fullest potential, a family of four can obtain 100% of their caloric needs from 1/8 acre of Biointensive beds. This is an ideal growing method for anyone lacking space, for those on a budget, for the water conscious, and for those who like bed prep better than weeding.
