Most of the fall planting has been finished in the raised bed and container area. We are still hand-watering seedlings and new transplants because the wind has been drying out the surface of the beds and the seedling roots are still too small to reach the water from the drip lines. We harvested just a few eggplants and some okra from the raised beds this week but there isn’t a lot of production right now. We spent some time weeding and mulching the new plants.
Although our Kadota fig tree has a good bit of fruit on it right now, the rest of the fig trees haven’t done as well as we would like them too this year. So we have begun to give them some more attention. This week we pulled some of the mulch back from the trunks because it seemed to be encouraging root sprouts. We are doing some research on fig tree care and hope to get better production next year.
The bulk of the work these days is in the row garden. We harvested more okra there this week. Mostly, though, we have been preparing the soil and beginning to plant. We cultivated and weeded between the rows, and tilled compost and fertilizer in some rows too. Then we planted cabbage, kale, beets, spinach, lettuce and cauliflower. We have had to hand-water the new seedlings just as we have been doing in the raised beds.
The demonstration garden is located north of the Williamson County Extension Office driveway at 3151 SE Innerloop Road, Georgetown, Texas. Master gardeners are usually at work in the vegetable garden on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00. Anyone is welcome to stop by to see the garden or to ask questions of the master gardeners.
