The good news this week is that, as far as we can tell, there was no produce stolen from the row garden. The bad news is that the watering wand that we use to hand-water seedlings and new transplants is missing. So it appears that the thieves may be shifting from taking produce to stealing equipment. This is disheartening and surprising, since the row garden is only about 150 yards from the gas pumps where Williamson County deputies and EMS workers fill their vehicles. Perhaps the thefts are occurring at night time when the thieves can more easily hide.
The row garden has been producing enough that we have still been able to make our weekly deliveries to The Caring Place. We picked okra nearly every other day this week. We also picked some cantaloupe and the last of the spring tomatoes. Then we pulled out the spring tomato plants and cleaned up the row garden area.
We harvested some cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, a bit of okra and a few Sun Gold cherry tomatoes from the raised beds. We also did some work cleaning up the beds, trimming back the herbs and tying up some vines that have been sprawling across the paths.
We had our fall planting planning meeting last week so we did an inventory of our amendments and seeds in order to determine what we will need to stock up for the fall planting season. Given the heat we’ve had the past few weeks, it is hard to realize that the time for fall planting is almost here. The whole team looks forward to the cooler weather that fall will bring.
The demonstration garden is located north of the Williamson County Extension Office driveway at 3151 SE Innerloop Road, Georgetown, Texas. Master gardeners are usually at work in the vegetable garden on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00. Anyone is welcome to stop by to see the garden or to ask questions of the master gardeners.
