VEG Deer Resistant Plant Area

The Deer Resistant Area by Victoria Educational Gardens Greenhouse has a new sign thanks to MG, Kathy Chilek! This area which is outside the fence is maintained by master gardeners with Betty Friedrichs.

Betty explains that nothing is deer proof when they are starving. Deer resistant means they avoid because of taste and/or smell.

The whole bed, except for the 4 roses (which are grandfathered) is “Deer Resistant.” A small sign denotes that. Betty noted that nothing was eaten last year during our drought except the rose blooms.

Take a trip out to VEG and read the markers to see which plants have been successfully deer resistant. Many of them are Texas Superstar plants such as Thryallis, Pride of Barbados, Hamelia Hummingbird Bush also called Firebush, and Esperanza.

(Photos by Betty F.)

Some of the plants that have proven to be deer resistant for us are:

Esperanza

Hamelia

Mexican Flame Vine

Pride of Barbados

Thryallis

These are only the plants we have planted in this area. There are many more you can count on being “deer resistant.”
