The Iris Area at VEG has gone through many changes since it was designed and installed in 2007 by master gardener Linda Valdez. It was redone by Kathy Chilek and Ruth Anderson and again redone by Betty Friedrichs. It has contained many different kinds of irises. The bearded iris, Siberian iris and Louisiana iris can be found here. Bearded irises have been known to bloom three times per year. The Siberian irises have attractive foliage with flowers growing on thin stems, and are long-lived once established. Louisiana irises require six to eight hours of sun a day to bloom at their best. Betty really has a lot of lovely Tall Bearded reblooming Irises going strong now. My hat’s off to Betty Friedrichs. One day we visited in the Iris Area and discussed how pretty the irises looked. As she was heading out, I thanked her again for all her hard work. She said, “This isn’t hard work. It is what I do!”
This is an Iris Area story Nancy Kramer about one of the latest update in the Iris Area.

This photo was taken a few years ago. The area in in memory of Cliff Knezek’s wife. Cliff was an master gardener emeritus and passed away at the age of 101. Just as the passage of life, the passage of time has brought further updates to The Iris Area.
