THE HEIRLOOM GARDEN

Did any of your grandparents or other relatives have lovely gardens? Didn’t you wonder where all the plants came from and how they acquired them? Most towns didn’t have regular nurseries or places that sold live plants and seeds. These were available only in the planting season and usually at open-air markets or fairs.
The theme of our Garden is ever-changing as we obtain different plants from friends, family and neighbors just as our relatives did in the past years. When you get plants in this manner whether from seeds, cuttings, extra plants or division, always try to duplicate the growing conditions as to sun, shade and wind patterns. This is true in trees, shrubs, ground covers and plants, both annuals and perennials, and bulbs and tubers. Try to get as much information as to the type of soil, feeding, mulching and spacing from the successful gardener. Many annuals can be carried over from season to season with proper care and some perennials will not live through our hot summers.
Our plant list has changed many times since we first started this garden.
