Tom Harpool was undeniably a remarkable individual who has left an indelible mark on the horticulture field and the Denton County, Texas, community. With a rich history of contributions to the Denton County Master Gardener Association (DCMGA) and an extensive record of leadership, Tom Harpool deserves the Texas Emeritus Master Gardener status.
Tom’s journey as a Master Gardener began in 1994 when he completed the DCMGA training requirements. Quickly rising through the ranks, he assumed pivotal roles within the organization, including First Vice President in 1998 and President in 1999. His legacy within the DCMGA extends beyond his presidential term, continuing as Past President in 2000, exemplifying his enduring commitment to the organization.
Tom’s extensive horticultural knowledge was not his only asset. As a seasoned businessman, his leadership in the Harpool Seed Company and Harpool Fertilizer Company, which later expanded to include lawn and garden products, catapulted these enterprises into the nation’s top ten lawn and garden suppliers. His shrewd business acumen was a valuable resource for the DCMGA, fostering growth and sustainability.
Beyond the DCMGA, Tom Harpool devoted himself to numerous projects and initiatives that supported the missions of the Texas Master Gardener program and the Denton County Master Gardener Association. His involvement in projects like the Beautification of Denton program, Denton Redbud Day, and the UNT Environmental Education, Science & Technology Building showcased his dedication to enhancing the community’s green spaces and environmental education.
Tom held leadership roles in various horticultural and community organizations, including the Texas Seedmen’s Association, the Texas Association of Nurserymen, the National Lawn and Garden Distributor’s Association, and Texas Certified Seed Producers. Furthermore, his service on the Denton ISD board and contributions to organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts of America, and United Way demonstrate his unwavering commitment to the Denton County community. Tom continued to support his cherished causes until his passing in 2009.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions and leadership, Tom Harpool was granted the title of Honorary Lifetime Member in 2007, a testament to his invaluable service and dedication to the Denton County Master Gardener Association. His accomplishments and enduring commitment to horticulture, community, and leadership make him a prime candidate for Texas Emeritus Master Gardener status. Tom Harpool’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, expertise, and service, and his induction as an Emeritus Master Gardener would be a fitting tribute to his exceptional contributions.
