The Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program engages local students in hands-on gardening, science, and environmental learning. Supported by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, our San Jacinto County Master Gardeners bring this nationally recognized youth education program to Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD and other community sites across the county.
Through gardening, children gain a deeper appreciation for nature, nutrition, and teamwork—discovering how much fun learning can be when it grows from the ground up!
Local Program Highlights
Since 2012, the San Jacinto County Master Gardeners have helped students in 3rd and 5th grade learn how to plant, grow, and harvest their own food. Using the “Learn, Grow, Eat & Go!” (LGEG) curriculum, the program combines gardening with nutrition and movement activities that encourage healthy habits for life.
Students participate in:
- Seed starting, transplanting, and maintaining garden beds
- Learning about soils, composting, and pollinators
- Keeping journals, collecting data, and sharing discoveries
- Harvesting and tasting what they grow
Even the most hesitant eaters often find themselves enjoying broccoli, cabbage, and spinach—because they grew it themselves!
Community and Service
The JMG program goes beyond the classroom. Students learn the value of service by sharing produce with local senior citizens and participating in community garden projects. Over the years, more than 500 students have completed the JMG experience in San Jacinto County, building knowledge, confidence, and a love for gardening.
