Ms. Singer was a member of the Denton County Master Gardener Association (DCMGA) from 2008 through 2023.
Ms. Singer had a passion for Earth-Kind gardening and landscape design. She engaged in ongoing education, first taking an Earth-Kind class with Dr. George at the Dallas AgriLife Center and later achieving her Master Gardener Advanced Training in Earth-Kind Landscaping 2016. In 2010 she and Claud Singer developed a Design Your Yard class utilizing many of the Earth-Kind concepts. The class was open to the public and DCMGA members and was held over three days. At the end of the class, participants went home with a realistic landscape design they created themselves that included hardscape, garden design, and plant selection. In 2012, she won third place in Graphic Presentations from the Texas Master Gardener Association Conference for her presentation on Basil. In 2012 she also received the Education award from DCMGA and in 2021 she was awarded the John Cooper Educator award for her education efforts in Earth-Kind concepts and design. The Earth-Kind Design Your Yard class continues twice a year.
For many years, Ms. Singer’s love of plants found her heavily involved with DCMGA’s Gardenscapers which taught the public about Earth-Kind concepts and design, as well as provided design consultations for public, school, and historic gardens. She was selected as project manager for the group in 2012 and thrived in the position for six years. She explored and identified new software for the group making their efforts more efficient, organized design drawings for a variety of settings to provide the public, and developed a team approach to garden consultation.
Ms. Singer’s leadership spread beyond her landscaping efforts. In 2014 she was elected as vice president for the DCMGA Board of Directors serving two years. She was also active in the annual Plant Sale, helping to select plants and to help customers with Texas native questions. She was involved in the annual Garden Tour and her home was selected for the Tour in 2017.
Ms. Singer’s love of horticultural education opened approachable doors for the public to learn basic landscaping design while absorbing effective methods for soil preparation, plant selection, and care. She welcomed everyone to her classes and provided fun learning for adults and youth.
