Selena Schindler – Denton County

photo of Selena Schindler

Class of 1992

The Denton County Master Gardener Association and the broader Texas Master Gardener community deeply cherish Selena Schindler. With an illustrious history of contributions to both organizations, Selena undoubtedly merits the prestigious Texas Emerita Master Gardener designation.

Selena embarked on her Master Gardener journey in 1992 when DCMGA was in its infancy. Drawn to the program by a newspaper article, Selena, a Denton native, found the perfect outlet for her profound love of nature and gardening, a passion nurtured during cherished moments gardening with her father.

Throughout the years, Selena’s dedication and leadership within the DCMGA were genuinely outstanding. She served as DCMGA President in 1996 and continued her contributions as Past President in 1997. Her influence extended beyond the county level when she assumed the role of President of the Texas Master Gardener Association in 1997. Selena also played a pivotal role in enhancing communication within the DCMGA community as the editor of Roto-Teller, DCMGA’s inaugural newsletter. Her involvement went even further, representing DCMGA on the State Board of Directors and serving on various state committees.

Selena’s exceptional service garnered several recognitions and awards, including being named a DCMGA Honorary Life Member in 2010. This distinction is a testament to her enduring commitment and contributions to the Master Gardener community.
In addition to her leadership roles, Selena actively participated in numerous projects and activities that supported the mission of both the Texas Master Gardener program and DCMGA. Beyond holding the title of Master Gardener, she devoted her time to working in the AgriLife office during DCMGA’s early days, assisting the public, answering phones, and performing administrative tasks. Selena emphasized the valuable learning experience she gained through collaboration, highlighting that her education extended far beyond the classroom.
Selena’s profound passion for the environment and her extensive knowledge led her to attain certification as a Master Naturalist, further enhancing her ability to make a significant impact on her local ecosystem. She continues championing wildlife preservation at her 408-acre SnK Wildlife Reserve in Cuero, Texas.

In light of her unwavering dedication, leadership, and enduring contributions that have profoundly influenced both DCMGA and the broader Texas Master Gardener community, there is no doubt that Selena Schindler should be awarded the Texas Emerita Master Gardener status. Selena embodies the true spirit of a Master Gardener, and she deserves to be celebrated and honored through this prestigious recognition.
