Port Aransas Arbor Day Giveaway. 23 October 2021.

October 21, 2021 by tarab

NMG will be participating in the Port Aransas Arbor Day Tree Give Away on Saturday, October 23, 2021.  The event is scheduled from 9:00AM till Noon, however, we need to arrive NLT 8:00AM for orientation, training and setup.  The event will take place at the University of Texas, Marine Science Institute, 750 Channel View Dr, Port Aransas, TX 78373, USA.

We will be contributing by assisting those coming to get a tree or shrub as part of the Give Away.  All are 3-gallon sized Texas native species that include:  American Beautyberry, Parsley Hawthorn, Texas Persimmon, Deciduous Holly, Mexican Plum, Overcup Oak, Willow Oak, Palmetto Palm, and Elderberry.  We will answer questions and get plants from a staging area to give to the guest.

NMG will be able to select from the available plants. Volunteer hours earned can be applied in A.ED-Presentations, EXT OFF-Project, COMMUNITY SUPPORT and/or NMG-Support along with Travel Time.  This will assist you in applying volunteer hours in a Project where you need hours.  You can take the hours in one Project, or you can divide the time between Projects.  In the Description use Port Aransas Arbor Day Tree Give Away.  Attached is a Site Layout.  Volunteers are asked to park in the designated parking leaving Guest Parking open for those visiting to pick up plants.  If you have a NMG T-Shirt or Shirt, be sure to wear it with your name badge or tag.

Want to win $500 to improve an outdoor space in your community? Gather a team and enter this year’s Texas Arbor Day contest using Tree Trails, a tree mapping application from Texas A&M Forest Service. This is a great activity to do with school groups, members of the community, or fellow chapter members!

Trees make our world a better place, and it is our responsibility to make sure our trees remain healthy and cared for. Knowing where our trees are growing, measuring them, and calculating their individual benefits is a great place to start. Tree Trails is an app that turns this process a fun activity that anyone can do. Gather your group of friends, classmates, and/or members of the community and help Texas map our trees and calculate the real dollar benefits that those trees provide! Visit our website for full contest rules.

Getting Started:

Step 1: Download the Tree Trails app on your tablet or smart phone or visit the Tree Trails website.

Step 2: Identify an area that meets the requirements of the contest.

This year there are 4 location categories to choose from:

1. School Campus (K-12 or College Campus)
2. Public Library
3. Unique Public Green Spaces (Parks, greenbelts, arboretums etc.)
4. Walking Distance to a Hospital or Assisted Living Facility

Step 3: Assemble your group, gather your supplies, and hit the field!

The instructions in the app tell you exactly what you’ll need and what steps to take to gather data on your trees.

You’ll be measuring the tree, identifying the species, and entering the GPS coordinates, and then the app calculates all of the benefits for you!

Don’t worry if you’re not a tree expert! The app gives you everything you need to successfully complete a Tree Trail, no experience necessary.

Step 4: Submit the Texas Arbor Day Tree Trails Contest Form, including the name you’ve given your Tree Trail, the names of your group’s members, and the organization or community that you represent.

    Seville Farms Plant Sale

Our supplier of Texas Super Star Plants is Seville Farms. They were founded in 1994 in a small shop near Mansfield, Texas. Their mission is to provide high quality annuals, perennials, and ground covers to garden centers, and now home gardeners, across Texas.
Nueces Master Gardeners are members of our local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.
What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their Extension office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities.
Nueces Master Gardener Fundraising efforts support educational programs of TAMU AgriLife Extension and NMG. These programs are offered to the community and schools in various settings.
Nueces Master Gardeners also support Scholarships of high school and college students studying horticulture.

2021 Plant Sale Update

September 6, 2021 by tarab

Hello Everyone,    I come to you as the Plant Sale Co-Chair and Inventory Committee chair  to remind you that as of this next Thursday, 9/9/2021, we are exactly 1 month away from our plant sale.   This is Nueces Master Gardeners major fundraiser for the year and we depend largely on our members to make some type of plant contribution to the sale.   This year we are standardizing the pots of plants. and will be accepting plants in 1,2 or 3 gallon pots.  However, our plant standardizing chairperson has informed me that we will also  be accepting 4” pots of herbs and succulents. She is also creating an “Others” category for really nice plants that are in a nice pot. In other words, one of a kind. So, no standardizing there, just lovely plants that you would like to donate.
In the event you have misplaced or lost the inventory sheets I previously mailed out I am attaching them again.  One is in excel format and the other in WORD format.   Just fill in the pertinent information and return to me via email and I will record your contribution.
The deadline for plant entries is 9/24/2021.
Thank you so much for your contributions.

West Oso Bridge Project

August 6, 2021 by tarab

NMG came out in strength to support the West Oso ISD Summer Bridge Program over two Wednesdays in July.  The students were 7th to 12th grade ESL, Economically and Socially Disadvantaged Students who were specifically  selected to receive the enrichment outing.  None of the students nor the educators had ever visited the sites selected for the two field trips.

On Wednesday, July 21, 13 students were transported to the Corpus Christi Xeriscape Gardens for an interactive presentation on the principle of design requiring little or no irrigation or other maintenance, used in arid regions.  Joan Salge, NMG and Project Coordinator and Vince Muscarello provided handouts, discussion and Q&A for the 45 minute excursion.  They then boarded the school bus and headed across town to the 2nd Baptist Church Raised Bed Gardens located off Timbergate and Staples.

They were welcomed there by Daisy Castillo, Community Gardens Coordinator for the Texas A&M AgriLife Program and Vin who gave a presentation and tour of the gardens answering many questions.  The students, educators and bus driver were treated to a fresh vegetable salad bowl with balsamic dressing which none had ever had.  The students thought the dressing was chocolate dressing.  They were hesitant at first, but quickly went back for seconds.  All took extra bowls home with a greater appreciation for fresh vegetables and balsamic dressing thanks to Mary Helen (1VP) and Jim Johnston.

The 2nd Field Trip was conducted on Wednesday, July 28 at the South Texas Botanical Gardens.  16 NMGs and Interns welcomed the students and educators for a multifaceted interactive tour of the gardens and exhibits.  NMGs and Interns were: Paul Parr, Patty DeGlopper (I), Carol Barrgay, Gloria VanZante, Angie Corley (I), Jack Harris, Renee Brown, Ronnie Munoz, Marie Privott (I), Tom Andrews (I), Rebecca Stalcup, Vince Muscarello, Donna Gonzales, Linda Frost, Kevin Gibbs, and Huxley Smith.
