Native Pollinator Plants of Texas

May 16, 2021 by tarab

If you love pollinators and understand their role in the ecological system, then this information is for you.

The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)  has a program whereby they provide plants that can help solve natural resource problems.

They have sent out this nifty little pdf document which you can download here.

You will need a free pdf reader. Adobe PDF free is a good one.

If  you’d like to know more about this program and the work that the NRCS does in this area, you can go their website here:

Rose Garden Assistance Needed at Botanical Gardens

May 16, 2021 by tarab

Renee Brown has sent out an urgent message concerning the Rose Beds at the Botanical Gardens.

Here is the message:

The Rose Team at the STBG has 5 Rose beds that have not been adopted. 2 volunteers may share a bed.

These 5 beds are newly planted and will be easy to maintain if we start now. Light work level!

Volunteers may work around their own schedule but checking on the assigned bed every 2 weeks is recommended. Mainly keeping weeds out and deadheading is needed. Training available from the CC Rose Society.

This will be great opportunity to accrue some volunteer hours. You do not need to visit the beds at a specific time. You can go out to assist whenever you have free time available.

For more information, please text or call Renee Brown to Adopt a Rose bed!

Contact info for Renee:  (361)443-2719

Walk Across Texas! 2021

May 15, 2021 by tarab

It is time for the annual Walk Across Texas Event!

Walk Across Texas is 8 week community program delivered through a web-based platform and is designed to assist people of various ages and abilities to establish the habit of regular physical activity.

Walk Across Texas! is designed for participants to be encouraged and supported by a team, using a fun and motivating approach.  The event challenges teams to track and log mileage to virtually walk across the state of Texas – 832 miles!

Using a system of self-reporting physical activities, a study performed in 2016 found that self-reported physical activity significantly improved from week 1 to week 8, increasing an average of nearly 5 miles per week, which translates to an additional 11,000 steps/week. For a quick teaser on Walk Across Texas activity equivalents, go here

Walk Across Texas has individual, youth and organization team sign ups available.  This is a great way to celebrate the new relaxing of CDC guidelines – get outside with friends and family and WALK!

As per Kevin Gibbs, if you participate you can put the hours towards VMS.

The Nueces County Challenge starts on 21 May 2021 and continues through to 15 July 2021.

For more information or to register please visit the Walk Across Texas! webpage.  Once you are registered, you will receive your link to create your profile and be notified of any virtual events.

Metro Elementary School of Design had two raised beds that had been neglected until Gracie Susik-Lascano decided something needed to be done to revive them.  She got permission from Principal to form a Garden Club.  The PE Coach volunteered to be the club sponsor.  With the support of her mom and dad, they raised the necessary donations to build two additional raised beds, install repurposed tires as flower bed and got three picnic tables.  They contacted the NMG to come see their work and get advise on planting flowers and vegetables.  The NMG have visited twice.  On the second visit each student was given eight (8) tomato plants, a packet of marigold seeds (as companion plants to the tomato plants) and several packets of vegetables seeds to take home plant and care for.

Galvan Elementary School had one raised bed. The Principal and a sponsoring teacher had been raising seedlings in pots and decided they would like to expand their project to include four additional raised beds. During Spring Break the NMG along with Mr. George Woods, Health & PE Curriculum and Instruction Specialist installed the four beds. The frames were installed and weed block material was laid down inside each bed to solarize them during the summer months. NMG will return when school starts in the fall to fill the beds with soil and help the students plant their fall crop.
