Jean Fefer – Harris County

Dr. Jean A. Fefer earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry and retired as Emeritus Professor of Chemistry from the University of Houston–Downtown, where she inspired countless students with her passion for science. She brought that same dedication and academic rigor to her volunteer work with AgriLife Extension, where she became a certified Texas Master Gardener in 1997 and retired at the end of 2024.

A prolific public speaker, Dr. Fefer provided gardening education across a wide range of venues including community centers, senior centers, schools, and public libraries. In some years, she delivered over 50% of the total speaking engagements for the county’s horticulture program, an extraordinary contribution that speaks to her reliability, knowledge, and deep commitment to public service.

She specialized in teaching subjects such as plant propagation, herbs, vegetable and organic gardening, irrigation techniques and community gardening. Dr. Fefer was also a key contributor in developing Extension factsheets and presentations on these topics, helping to ensure that scientifically sound, research-based information was accessible to the public and fellow volunteers.

Dr. Fefer served on the Board of Directors, including one year as President, and wrote a handbook for board officers.  In addition to serving on the Speakers Bureau committee, she also chaired the Education committee for many years.

Among her most impactful community efforts was her 10+-year partnership with a local school, where she helped integrate gardening into the school’s curriculum. She provided ongoing, weekly instruction to students and faculty, and conducted work on innovative watering solutions, including the implementation of an Olla irrigation system to improve water efficiency and plant health.

Dr. Fefer’s lifelong dedication to education, both as a university professor and as a Master Gardener, exemplifies the mission of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Her influence is seen in the gardens she helped build, the sustainable practices she promoted, and the minds (both young and old) she inspired along the way.
