Presentation to Combat Plant Pests and Diseases Given

Small orange insect pests on a plant

by Lydia Holley                                                                                         April 11, 2022

On Thursday, April 14, 5:00 p.m., Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will host “Diseases, Pests and Critters! Oh my!” at the Harvest Garden located inside the Henderson County Regional Fairpark Complex, 3356 TX-31 Business, Athens. The presentation is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so it is best to bring your own camp chair.

If you have ever grown vegetables, you know that you must constantly be vigilant against diseases. Viruses, fungi, and vitamin deficiencies often show themselves first on leaves. However, pests such as spider mites, cutworms, and scale may also rear their ugly heads.

How do you tell if you are combating a disease vs. a pest? What are the preventative measures you can take? What do you do about an outbreak?

Besides diseases and pests, you may also have to deal with creatures. Grasshoppers, rabbits, and deer can cause a lot of damage in a short period of time. How can you combat them?

All your questions will be answered in the presentation. Master Gardeners will also be available to answer any gardening question you may have.

The Harvest Garden is a demonstration garden designed to provide hands-on learning for the public about growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Your support of HCMGA, such as through the online plant sale which runs now through April 15, allows these presentations to be provided for free.

Come learn about the diseases, pests, and critters which might cause harm to your garden and how to prevent an attack.
