Presentation on Shade Gardening Given Wednesday

Shade Gardening Presentation

by Lydia Holley                                                       May 8, 2023

Master Gardener Deb Pascoe will present “Gardening in the Shade” at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, May 10, at the Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library, 121 S. Prairieville, Athens. This presentation is free and open to the public. It is a part of Henderson County Master Gardener Association’s Library Series.

Shade in the garden can be tricky. There is part shade, bright shade, deep shade, and many other variations. If you have an area of shade in your garden, you know it can be difficult to find just the right plant for the type of shade you have. It can also become a challenge to find plants which have foliage or blooms which lighten the area. Still, you want to use a variety of plants to give visual interest.

One of the hardest shade areas can be under trees, where you may have dry shade. Sometimes, though, without the sun able to reach a shady area, water will stand in it. You want to make certain the plant you choose fits the right conditions you have. That includes both its watering needs as well as the correct shade amount.

If you have shade in your garden, Pascoe will give you the solutions you have been seeking. From plants that bloom in shade to plants with bright foliage, she will give you loads of ideas and inspiration. Whether you need an evergreen or a groundcover, Pascoe will provide you with several options.

If you are puzzled by the shade in your garden, or if you just want to expand the number of plants you have in your shady areas, come get a listing of various plants which will grow in shade. You will leave enlightened.
