Presentation on Planting a Fall Garden Given

Presentation on Planting a Fall Garden Given

by Lydia Holley                                                        June 12, 2023

Henderson County Master Gardener Association will give a teaching demonstration on starting a fall garden at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the HCMGA Harvest Garden located inside the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex, 3356 SH-31E, Athens, Tx. The presentation is free and open to the public. It will be held outdoors, so dress for the weather and bring an umbrella or sunscreen. Only a few chairs will be available, so you may also wish to bring a folding chair for seating.

It may be hard to believe, but summer is the time to start a fall vegetable garden. If you want fresh vegetables in a few months, they should be started now or within the next several weeks, depending upon the vegetable grown.

At the presentation, Master Gardeners will tell you which vegetables to plant when, answer questions from the audience, and explain everything you will need to know to have a successful fall garden. In addition, Master Gardeners will tell you how and when to harvest your fall vegetables, how to store your additional produce, which vegetables you can continue to grow throughout the winter, and which plants will be killed in the first freeze.

In Texas, many gardeners enjoy growing vegetables more in the fall than they do in the spring because they can look forward to the weather turning cooler instead of hotter. You may think it is too hot to start a fall garden now. If, however, you wait until nice weather to start your garden, there will be many plants that will not have time to mature before cold weather arrives.

Come learn which seeds and/or starts to plant now, which can be planted later, and how you can grow a fall vegetable garden which produces an abundance of food. Having a successful fall vegetable garden is a lot like comedy: timing is everything.
