Preparing For Your Spring Vegetable Garden

Preparing For Your Spring Vegetable Garden - planting seeds

by Lydia Holley                                         February 19, 2024

Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will host “Preparing and Planting Your Spring Garden” on Tuesday, February 27, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Civic Hall, Cain Center YMCA, 915 S. Palestine St., Athens. Parking and access are from the lower-level Loyola Drive entrance. This presentation is a part of HCMGA’s Let’s Grow series. It is free and open to the public.

During the presentation, a panel of three Master Gardeners will discuss what you need to do to prepare your vegetable garden for spring planting. Soil preparation, seed starting, planting, and proper timing will all be discussed.

In East Texas, there is very little down time for those wanting to grow vegetables. However, that also means there are many vegetables that can be grown here and you can feed your family fresh vegetables for most of the year. That does not mean you can grow all things all year. Timing is important. Some vegetables will not continue to produce after it gets too hot and if you plant seeds too late in the fall, the frosts may kill some plants before they have a chance to fruit.

This presentation is the first in HCMGA’s Let’s Grow series. The Let’s Grow presentations are a series of lectures designed to help both beginner and advanced gardeners in a variety of gardening subjects, from growing food to beautifying your landscape.

If you are interested in growing vegetables this year, you will not want to miss this presentation. It will cover the basics of starting a spring vegetable garden as well as dive deep into the subjects of soil preparation and seed starting. Questions will be taken at the end of the program and Gardening Guide Books will be available.
