Planning a Vegetable Garden

by Lydia Holley                                                                                            October 4, 2021

Master Gardener Robert Erickson will present “Planning Your Vegetable Garden” on Tuesday, October 12, 5:30 p.m., Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library, 121 S. Prairieville, Athens. This presentation is a part of Henderson County Master Gardener Association’s (HCMGA) “Learn at the Library Series” given on the second Tuesday of each month. The presentation is free and open to the public. Due to spacing limitations, social distancing will not be observed. Masks are encouraged.

Erickson has years of experience growing vegetables in East Texas. During the presentation, he will explain how to know when to plant, how to know when to expect your plants will mature to be harvested, and which plants you personally need to grow.

One point Erickson will discuss is that gardens can become more bountiful than first expected. He will tell you what you can do with all the surplus. He will also explain how you can grow enough so you do not end up with too little.

Perhaps the biggest decision to make when starting a vegetable garden is whether to purchase plants or start seeds. Erickson will go through the pros and cons of each choice so you can determine which is best for you.

Since East Texas has a long growing season, you can have a spring vegetable garden and a fall vegetable garden. Many like growing a vegetable garden in fall best due to our moderate temperatures in autumn and early winter. After the presentation, Erickson will open the floor for questions, and participants will go home with a handout.

In addition to Erickson’s presentation, the HCMGA Monthly Gardening Guide will be available. The information in the guide combined with Erickson’s presentation make a powerful combination. If you are wanting to grow a fall vegetable garden, increase your chances for success by attending this presentation.
