Master Gardeners Hold Fall Festival and Plant Sale

by Lydia Holley                                      October 14, 2024

Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will hold an online sale from October 11 (9am) through October 20 (9pm). Eight different varieties of vegetables perfect for growing in the fall and through winter will be sold: arugula, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collard greens, cabbage, mustard greens, and two types of lettuces. Snapdragons, pansies, and dianthus—flowers that love East Texas’ autumn and winter weather—will also be available. Raffle tickets can be purchased online for a chance to win one of three prizes. Plants may be picked up from 9:00 a.m. to noon on October 25 at TVCC Greenhouse, 518 Cardinal Dr., Athens. Please bring your receipt to the pick-up point.

HCMGA will also host a day of fun on Saturday, October 26, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the East Texas Arboretum, 1601 Patterson Road, Athens. An entrance fee of $10 per carload will be charged by the arboretum, so pack your vehicle full because HCMGA is hosting a wealth of free activities for your entire family to enjoy.

Free seminars given by HCMGA throughout the day include learning about growing fall and winter vegetables, and how to make stunning floral arrangements for the holidays.

There will also be free hands-on origami classes and simple quilling lessons. Or make your own mason bee/pollinator house. Bounce houses will offer a hopping-fun activity. Should you get hungry, food trucks will be on hand. Come enjoy the day with your family and friends. Raffle winners will be drawn and announced there.

To access the online store, please go to https://txmg.org/hendersonmg/online-plant-sale/. HCMGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public on horticulture. Proceeds from the plant sale help fund future free horticultural programs such as the popular “Let’s Grow” series or the Summer Series which features horticultural presentations on a variety of topics given by Master Gardeners and other experts.

If you have attended any of our free programs in the past, HCMGA hopes you will consider supporting them so future presentations can continue to be given without cost to the public. This plant sale is one of only two fundraisers HCMGA holds throughout the year.
