Henderson County Master Gardener Association will host the presentation “How to Install a Drip Watering System at Home” given by Master Gardener and Retired Landscape Architect Dub Hirst on Tuesday, May 21, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Harvest Garden located inside the Henderson County Regional Fairpark Complex, 3356 Texas 31 East, Athens. The presentation is free and open to the public, and will be given rain or shine. Seating is limited, so bringing a camp chair is encouraged. This presentation is a part of the “Let’s Grow” Gardening Series, a series of monthly presentations given by Master Gardeners and other experts on a variety of horticultural topics.

In Texas, rain is not always reliable. Instead of hand watering when it gets dry, consider installing a drip irrigation system. This system uses water efficiently, letting small amounts of liquid spread without wasting a drop. And because the water is not sprayed on the plants, this system allows stems and leaves to stay dry, reducing the chance for disease. A drip system allows you to control the amount of water your plants receive. The addition of a timer will let you concentrate on other things while the system is working for you.

If the thought of connecting hoses, emitters, timers, etc. into a system that will water your garden seems complicated or confusing, you will want to attend this presentation. Hirst will not only explain each step and component to a drip irrigation system, he will demonstrate with actual parts. He will also address application rates, timing issues, and hose placement for best results.

Drip irrigation can be used in vegetable rows as well as in ornamental beds. Water is a valuable resource so every drip counts. Come learn how to best install a drip system to cover all your garden’s needs.
