Heal Your Soil

Heal Your Soil: HCMGA presentation on Tuesday, November 19, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Cain Center YMCA, 915 S. Palestine, Athens.

by Lydia Holley                                      November 11, 2024

The healthier your soil, the healthier your plants. To get to the root of many plant problems, Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will present “Healthy Soils Are Full of Life” on Tuesday, November 19, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Cain Center YMCA, 915 S. Palestine, Athens. This presentation is free and open to the public.

This talk is part of HCMGA’s “Let’s Grow” series, presentations given by experts on a variety of horticultural topics. Please enter at the lower level off of Loyola Drive and take the elevator or stairs to the Civic Hall Meeting Room. This will be the last “Let’s Grow” presentation given in 2024.

The first step to getting healthy soil is to take a soil test. A test will tell you the soil’s pH, its nutrient needs, and which fertilizers you may need. Master Gardeners will explain the best way to gather soil for your test, what to expect from its results, and your next steps. Test kits will be available.

Earth-Kind® landscaping practices will be explained. This approach promotes sound, environmentally-responsible soil and plant management. Effective methods for watering, fertilizing, and the use of pesticides will be given. Master Gardeners will review the use of organic materials such as mulch and compost, preparation of garden areas, and water management systems.

By utilizing a few steps, not only will your soil be healthier, your plants will be stronger, more productive or lush, and able to fend off pests or diseases better. Fall and winter are the perfect time to incorporate some of these techniques. Then, come Spring, your soil will be ready to grow your best garden ever. Come learn how you can make your soil as healthy as it can be.
