Are you looking for a thoughtful gift for a gardener in your life? Try one of these ideas.
Gardeners love plants, so getting another should delight any gardener on your list. Try giving an indoor plant such as an African violet, Christmas cactus, jade plant, lucky bamboo, or snake plant. If they are new to gardening, an ivy would be nice. For those more experienced in keeping plants alive, an orchid could sprout a new obsession.
If you know the shoe size of your gardener friend, boots would come in handy. There are different types of gardening boots, from clogs, ankle boots, or those that come up high and cover the calf. Some gardeners change the type of boot they wear with the seasons.
A beautiful watering can could be a delight. Or consider giving a hose nozzle. For instance, a bubbler is an unusual but useful watering head. This round metal attachment has holes around the sides to break up the water’s pressure. It is perfect for watering container plantings.
Every gardener needs a way to cut things. Hand pruners are nice, but for small branches, a folding pruning saw is perfect. For even thicker branches, a wire saw will work, but it is also a lot of physical labor. If you trust your recipient to follow safety precautions with rotating blades, you might consider giving a pole saw or an electric chainsaw. Or hire the work out for them.
If your gardening friend grows vegetables, they could probably use a harvest basket, canning jars, or even a pressure canner.
If you want to spend more time with your friend making memories, give them the gift of a garden tour. This could be as elaborate as planning a long vacation trip touring historic gardens to taking them to a local botanic garden for the afternoon.
On a budget? Hand cream is always needed after working outside. Or call the extension office for a free soil test kit, although someone will eventually have to pay a small fee for the results. You could also donate your time to help your gardening friend weed, dig, or prune. I have never known a gardener to turn down assistance, and you may come to love gardening as much as your friend.
