by Lydia Holley                                         July 15, 2024

Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will host “Bugs Q & A” given by Master Gardener Francesca Rich on Tuesday, July 23, 6:00 p.m., Cedar Creek Library, 410 Cedar Creek Pkwy, Seven Points. The presentation is free and open to the public and is part of HCMGA’s “Let’s Grow” Series. Handouts will be given and questions from the audience will be taken.

Bugs can be good or bad. They can look dangerous. They may bite. But many of them are harmless or actually beneficial. Do you know which is which? Rich will give several examples of commonly-seen bugs. She will let you know which are harmful to you or your garden and which are often mistaken for its bad cousin. In addition to letting you know which bugs you need to steer clear of, she will point out which bugs you want to attract to your garden.

Audience participation is encouraged. You may bring photos of the bugs in your garden or specimens in jars for identification. The worst mistake is to eradicate all bugs from your garden. You want to attract beneficial bugs, and sometimes that means letting bad bugs come first. Rich will clear up any misunderstanding about the role beneficial bugs play and how to keep them coming.

HCMGA is a non-profit organization designed to educate the public on best horticultural practices. “Let’s Grow” is a series of monthly presentations on a variety of horticultural topics. Come learn about the tiny creatures in your garden. You may look at them a little more carefully and a little differently after the presentation.
