Culture

Verbena Prairie is a great choice! This low, trailing or creeping perennial is drought tolerant and long-blooming. Its range is throughout the great plains and portions of the southwest. Butterflies are attracted to the masses of purple blooms. You will enjoy the sweet fragrance.  Grows in full sun, but will tolerate part sun. It is one of the first to bloom in the spring and one of the last to be affected by freezes in the fall. A good plant in the far corner of the garden a hose doesn’t reach.

Noteworthy Characteristics

The nectar, rich flowers are a feast for butterflies. It’s very drought tolerant, and perfect for the water-wise, sunny, perennial garden. It makes a fine small scale, ground cover, and looks equally at home and the rock garden, where it adds a nice patch of color this durable southwestern native. It is also an excellent addition to the wildflower or your prairie plantings.  Its mat-forming habit makes it a great choice for erosion control on rocky slopes.

Problems

Generally, disease and pest free. Very low maintenance.

Garden Uses

Borders, rock gardens, mass plantings, ground, cover, xeric garden, native plant garden, cactus garden.
