Culture
Verbena Brazilian (Standing Verbena) is a Tender perennial that is winter hardy to USDA Zones 7-10. In colder zones, it is grown as an annual. Grow in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates poor soils as long as drainage is good. Leave the stems intact after blooming and plant may self-seed. Collected seeds may be sown directly in the garden after last frost date. Even if plants do not survive winter, they often remain in gardens for a number of years through self-seeding. Plants more freely self-seed in the South.
Noteworthy Characteristics
This is one of the best flowering perennials for attracting butterflies, and in particular the Tiger Swallowtail. Verbena Brazilian (Standing Verbena) is a long-blooming, drought tolerant plant that is extremely easy to grow. The rosy-violet flowers are tiny and extremely profuse. From a 12-inch-high basal clump of lance-shaped, serrated dark green leaves, rise 36 to 48-inch-tall vertical stems topped with clusters of pretty lilac-purple to rosy-purple flowers from late spring all the way to frost! An exceptional cut flower and attractor of butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
This variety has been called Verbena on a stick! It is also referred to as Brazilian Verbena and Upright Verbena
