Culture
These early midseason June-bearing strawberries are a good choice for fresh pickings of homegrown, bright red, flavorful fruit. Firm, large and beautifully shaped, these berries are especially appealing in fresh fruit trays. The vigorous, high-yielding, June-bearing Strawberry ‘Chandler’ plants produce very desirable strawberries. Strawberry ‘Chandler’ fruit are very large, firm, and produce early-season to mid-season. The strawberries vary from being long and wedge-shaped to large and conical. They are a brilliant red color, glossy, and have an exceptional flavor profile. These strawberries are good for eating fresh or shipping and very good for freezing. They are, however, only a fair choice for processing.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Fragaria × ananassa, is a low-growing, stoloniferous, herbaceous, hybrid perennial of cultivated origin that resulted from a cross between F. chiloensis and F. virginiana. This plant is cultivated around the world for its large, sweet, flavorful aggregate fruits. Compound leaves form a dense, mounding rosette and are made up of three, ovate leaflets with toothed margins. Plants will spread by above-ground stolons that root at the nodes, eventually forming new plantlets. The loose clustered, five-petaled, white flowers are 0.5-0.75″ wide. The plump, cone-shaped aggregate fruits can reach 1″ wide.
Problems
Chandler strawberry plants are not known for their resistance to common strawberry diseases. They are susceptible to leaf spot, leaf scorch, and red stele. Chandler strawberries also will succumb to anthracnose.
Garden Uses
