Culture

This garden beauty, Agastache ‘Heather Queen’, produces lovely rose-pink flowers all summer. It makes a great addition to any garden and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.  This plant has aromatic foliage with flower spikes that fill the air with a mint fragrance that both hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to.  Agastache ‘Heather Queen’ tolerates hot, dry conditions that many other flowers cannot handle. The gorgeous flower spikes first begin to appear in early summer and continue through mid to late fall.  Clumps should be divided every 3 – 4 years and division is best done in late fall or very early spring. ‘Heather Queen’ blooms are beautiful in bouquets.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Agastache, commonly called giant hyssop, is a genus containing about 30 species of upright herbaceous perennials, most of which are native to North America. Agastache hybrids often have showier flowers and better winter hardiness than species plants.  Agastache Cana ‘Heather Queen’ will eventually form a clump that does not spread or take over.  It is a herbaceous, moderately long-lived perennial plant with shrub-like appearance that produces large, dark-pink flower spikes and features gray-green foliage with small leaves that are dispersed throughout the plant. It grows rapidly and blooms the first year. Its fragrant flowers and foliage with strong mint fragrance attract hummingbirds and butterflies all summer and fall.

Problems

Crown/root rot may develop in poorly drained soils. No serious insect or disease problems, but watch for rust, powdery mildew and leaf spots. Deer tend to avoid this plant.

Garden Uses

Bold, aromatic, long-blooming perennial for sunny borders, cottage gardens or butterfly gardens. Effective near patios and along walkways. Good cut flower.
