Urban Orchard Series: Pruning and Propagating Fig Trees

Explore best methods pruning and propagating fig trees with Galveston County Master Gardener Barbara Canetti. Barbara will cover fig growth habit and fruiting varieties, as well as maintenance. We will visit our Discovery Garden Orchard for hands on experience with our fig collection.

Veggie Garden Series: Spring Vegetables

Galveston County Master Gardener Kevin Lancon will share his wealth of knowledge of hands-on experience growing vegetables. Topics will include how to plan and plant a spring vegetable garden that works best for you, and selecting the best varieties for Galveston County. We will also discuss pollination, mulching, the effects of full sun and shade on leafy and fruiting vegetables, and we will share more detailed information on some of the more popular spring vegetables for our area.

Tree Selection for the Home

Galveston County Master Gardener Briana Etie will share her expertise of trees for our area to assist homeowners in choosing the right tree for their home landscape. Attendees will learn about the right tree, and right place for landscape design, offer maintenance tips and dig into best practice for tree planting. An added bonus for this program, we will have a tree sapling giveaway to the first 20 people attending the program. MUST ATTEND to receive your complimentary tree sapling.

Urban Orchard Series: Planting Fruit Trees the Right Way

In this hands-on workshop, learn from Galveston County Master Gardener Herman Auer for best methods planting stone fruit plants and citrus. Techniques include sapling evaluation for plant vigor, root washing and root pruning. Wedge grafting fruit and citrus trees is included, along with best methods of planting.

Vegetable Garden Series: Growing Great Tomatoes, Pt. 2 of 3

Part two of the three part series Growing Great Tomatoes by Galveston County Master Gardener Ira Gervais. Ira reveals his secrets of successful planting and production of great tomatoes. Learn about the various varieties that do well in this area, making your selections, when to transplant your seedlings and various growing techniques. Information on soil requirements, needed nutrients and temperature ranges for best tomato fruit set. With this knowledge, you can become the tomato king on your street and be challenged by your friends.

Urban Orchard Series: Growing Peaches in Galveston County

Galveston County Master Gardener Herman Auer, with over 60 years of experience growing stone fruit in Galveston County, will guide you to practices to successfully grow peaches. Learn the better variety selections (both white and yellow flesh) for Galveston County, what to look for when buying your peach or other stone fruit tree, and the best planting locations. Topics will include chill hours, rootstock, pruning to shape for air flow, production, thinning methods that lead to larger fruit, and diseases and insects.

Galveston County Master Gardeners Hazel Lampton and Debbie Espinosa will discuss the how, when, & why of wedge, whip and tongue, and chip bud method grafting. This hands-on program will give you choices to graft stone fruit, pome evergreen fruit trees. The possibilities are endless when you know how to graft your own fruit trees!

***NOTE: Class is limited to 20 persons participating. You must pre-register in order to attend. Other persons may attend for observation only.***

Rescheduled: Fall Fairy Garden Workshop

The program Fall Fairy Garden Workshop is rescheduled for February 2024. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we look forward to hosting your interest in 2024.

Spark your child’s imagination and learn to build your own Fall Fairy Garden. Fairy gardens nurture creativity and make direct connections to our natural world. We will supply materials to make your garden fairy feel right at home. Registration fee is $25; registration link coming soon!

  • NOTE:
    • Workshop is limited to 24 participates = 12 pairs (1 adult and 1 child)
    • Limiting registration for children age 6 to 12 years old.
    • You must pre-register in order to attend.

*Cancellation requests made 24 hours in advance of time of event will receive refund minus Square fees. No refunds for cancellations less than 24 hours from time of event.
